Montesardo is a fraction of the town of Alessano in the province of Lecce and is the highest resort of Salento According to some scholars the name should derive from a Latin word that in English means steep mountain. Of interest to tourists are the Castle and the church of Santa Barbara. In medieval times was the seat of major schools of mathematics, philosophy and music.
